Zelenskyy Issues Ultimatum to Lukashenko: Deadline Set for Dismantling Relays Aiding Russia.
Zelenskyy's Ultimatum to Lukashenko
According to UATV: Volodymyr Zelenskyy has presented Alexander Lukashenko with a firm demand to remove relay equipment that enables Russian strikes against Ukraine. This move marks a critical juncture in Ukraine-Belarus relations, particularly given Minsk's role in the conflict that began in early 2022.
On June 20, 2023, President Zelenskyy gave Lukashenko a specific timeframe to comply with the dismantling order. The ultimatum underscores the gravity of the situation and the significance of Lukashenko's actions in facilitating Russian aggression against Ukraine. Military expert Ihor Romanenko noted that
“President Zelenskyy has strategically framed this situation so that Lukashenko understands the stakes.”This reflects Kyiv's effort to communicate its demands clearly to the Belarusian leader.
Ukraine-Belarus Interactions
In June 2023, Lukashenko publicly apologized to Zelenskyy, which may indicate a degree of willingness to engage in dialogue and meet certain demands. However, despite this, Lukashenko has not deployed Belarusian troops in the war against Ukraine, raising questions about his true intentions. At the same time, since early February 2022, he has allowed Russian forces to pass through Belarusian territory, underscoring his role as a Moscow ally.
Romanenko further commented that
“Zelenskyy’s statement is serious, and Lukashenko’s previous maneuvers will not simply be overlooked.”This suggests that Ukraine is prepared to respond to any Belarusian actions and will defend its interests in this complex situation. Consequently, relations between Ukraine and Belarus remain strained, and future developments could significantly impact the war’s trajectory.
This ultimatum may prove to be a defining moment in Ukraine-Belarus ties, as removing the relays could reduce the military threat from Russia. Meanwhile, Lukashenko’s stance and willingness to cooperate with Ukraine could profoundly affect the conflict’s regional dynamics. The unfolding events highlight ongoing tensions and the potential for new phases of interaction between these nations in the context of the war in Ukraine.
