Zelensky Ready for Peace Referendum: What Concessions the Plan Entails

According to ТСН: The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed hope that during a meeting with US President Donald Trump, it would be possible to agree on the terms for ending the war.

In an interview with Axios, he noted that if Russia agrees to a temporary ceasefire for at least 60 days, he is ready to present the corresponding peace plan for a nationwide referendum.

Zelensky emphasized that despite the 'significant progress' in negotiations, the proposed plan entails painful territorial concessions for Ukraine in the east. He hopes to improve these conditions, and if it is not possible to take a 'strong position' on territorial issues, the decision must receive support from the Ukrainian society.

Signals from America

In the US administration, Zelensky's readiness to hold a referendum is seen as an important step forward. Axios notes that the US no longer rules out the possibility of territorial compromises in the framework of future settlement.

Zelensky also stressed that conducting such a plebiscite would be accompanied by serious political, logistical, and security challenges. Therefore, a 60-day ceasefire is minimally necessary for the preparation and organization of the voting.

Russia's Position

A senior US representative told Axios that the Russian side understands the need for a ceasefire in the event of a referendum being announced in Ukraine, but insists on shorter terms for such a truce.

Previously, Zelensky also noted the almost complete readiness of a 20-point peace plan.

It should be noted that the Ukrainian and American negotiation teams have made significant progress in preparing a basic document with 20 points that contains security guarantees and a plan for the economic recovery of Ukraine. The parties are preparing for upcoming negotiations in the United States, not stopping diplomatic work even during the Christmas holidays.

This situation surrounding the possible referendum reflects Ukraine's desire to find ways to end the war and achieve peace. However, the complex political situation and external pressure from Russia continue to pose significant challenges on this path. Both sides, including international partners, are closely monitoring developments, as the outcomes of negotiations could significantly impact the future of the region.
