Zelensky on the Prospect of Negotiations

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that a negotiation process with Russia may now be feasible, citing a decline in Moscow’s battlefield momentum. According to Zelensky, Russia began losing the initiative in combat operations as early as December 2025, creating fresh diplomatic opportunities. In January 2026, the Ukrainian leader described a 'window for negotiations,' arguing that 'every month, Russia will lose more and more of its troops.'

Zelensky further emphasized that 'currently, they cannot occupy more territory in a month than we are liberating.' He expressed a firm belief that Ukraine must pursue a diplomatic resolution and 'sit down and talk' before the onset of next winter. Regarding potential talks, the president noted that the E3 format—comprising the United Kingdom, France, and Germany—could serve as a European negotiating platform.

“I don’t know if this is the best format, but I believe these countries could act as negotiators on behalf of Europe,” said Volodymyr Zelensky.

Turkey’s Role and International Diplomacy

Additionally, Zelensky recalled Turkey’s past involvement as a mediator in humanitarian matters.

“Turkey has always wanted to be a mediator, and we have had some successes in repatriating our prisoners of war with their help,” stated Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, reported that negotiations between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia at the delegation level have exhausted their potential. EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, stressed that any future talks to end the war should address not only issues concerning Ukraine. These statements suggest that Kyiv is prepared to seek pathways to a peaceful settlement as the military situation on the front lines shifts in its favor.

President Zelensky’s remarks about potential negotiations reflect strategic changes in how Ukraine approaches the conflict with Russia. Russia’s loss of initiative may stem from military setbacks, which in turn opens the door for diplomatic efforts. Importantly, Ukraine is weighing various formats for conducting talks, potentially involving active participation from European nations and Turkey, thereby increasing the chances of achieving peace.
