Belgium Seizes Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker Following Zelenskyy's Call for Confiscation.
Seizing Russia's 'Shadow Fleet' Tankers
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged nations to confiscate vessels from Russia's 'shadow fleet,' a call made as Belgium detained one such oil tanker. Zelenskyy condemned Russia's actions as akin to those of a 'mafia structure,' emphasizing the need for a firm and systematic response to its aggression. This shadow fleet is used to circumvent international sanctions on Russian oil exports, a key source of funding for its war effort.
Belgium has detained a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker and is escorting it to the port of Zeebrugge for seizure. This incident marks a significant development in the international effort to curb the flow of Russian petroleum products that violate global restrictions. In a related move, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also imposed sanctions on 225 ship captains involved in exporting Russian oil products, while Ukraine has sanctioned 91 vessels that exported oil and other resources in breach of international norms.
'We welcome these decisive actions against Moscow's floating wallet and thank France for supporting the operation,'
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
These steps highlight the increasing activity of European nations in countering Russia's aggressive policies and securing the continent's energy security.
Global Coordination Against Aggression
The situation underscores the critical need for global coordination in combating Russian aggression, which manifests not only militarily but also through economic channels. European countries, including Belgium and France, are demonstrating a readiness to take decisive measures to reduce dependence on Russian energy resources, a move that could significantly impact the region's economic landscape. Simultaneously, these actions send a signal to other nations about the necessity of intensifying efforts to counter similar forms of economic expansion.
