Ukrainian MP Demands Probe into Ex-Presidential Advisor's Russia Ties; SBU Responds.
Yaroslav Zheleznyak's Appeal to the Security Service of Ukraine
According to Espreso.tv: Two weeks ago, Ukrainian lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak formally requested that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) investigate Veronika Anikieievych, a former advisor to Andriy Yermak, head of the President's Office, for potential connections to Russia. The inquiry specifically focuses on whether Russian intelligence agencies may have influenced personnel decisions within Ukraine's government. This request comes amid heightened scrutiny of internal security and loyalty during the ongoing war with Russia.
SBU Response and Zheleznyak's Reaction
In its official reply, the SBU stated that it possesses no information linking Anikieievych to representatives of Russian special services, including the FSB. The agency's statement read:
“We inform you that the Security Service of Ukraine has no information regarding possible ties between the aforementioned individual and representatives of Russian intelligence agencies, nor any other influence from the aggressor state on her activities.” - Security Service of Ukraine.
Commenting on this outcome, Yaroslav Zheleznyak expressed ambiguity:
“The truth is, it’s not very clear what this actually means.” - Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
Zheleznyak's appeal underscores ongoing concerns about potential Russian interference in Ukraine's internal staffing decisions, a particularly sensitive issue given the country's state of war and deteriorating relations with the aggressor. While the SBU's lack of corroborating evidence suggests no immediate grounds for further investigation, the episode highlights persistent questions about trust in state institutions and their ability to safeguard against foreign influence.
