Russia Seeks Sanctions Relief in Geneva Talks.
Ukraine, US, and Russia Meet in Geneva
According to UATV: A new round of talks between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia was held in Geneva on February 17 and 18, 2023. The primary focus was to discuss the ongoing situation in Ukraine, with a particular emphasis on Russia's attempts to secure the removal of international sanctions. These negotiations are a critical diplomatic channel amidst the ongoing war.
According to intelligence from five unnamed EU countries, the chances of reaching an agreement to end the war this year are slim. An anonymous head of a European intelligence agency noted that
"Russia does not want a quick end to the war". This indicates that Moscow's stance remains rigid, and it is leveraging talks with the US to pursue its own objectives. As the same anonymous expert stated,
"Moscow is using negotiations with the US to try to get sanctions lifted".
The Intricacies of International Diplomacy
The Geneva talks are part of a trilateral format involving Ukraine, the US, and Russia. The next stage of this process involves reaching a sufficient level of consensus to bring decisions before the respective presidents for review. However, commenting on the nature of these discussions, the European intelligence chief characterized them as a
"theatrical performance". This suggests that the true intentions of the parties may not be fully transparent, casting doubt on the potential outcomes.
These negotiations underscore the profound complexity of international diplomacy surrounding the conflict in Ukraine. Despite efforts to find a peaceful resolution, Russia's unyielding position complicates the prospects for constructive dialogue. The lack of progress risks further escalation, with significant implications for global security and the relationship between the West and Russia.
