The Armed Forces of Ukraine have devised a new strategy in Russia's Kursk region. They are trying to move quickly and encircle the Russian troops. This was stated by Forbes analyst David Axe.

At the beginning of this week, Ukrainian troops overcame the Russian defense near the village of Novy Shlyakh. According to Axe, this may be the beginning of a new strategy.

“A Ukrainian tactical group, led by the 95th Air Assault Brigade, has positioned near the village of Veselye. If the Ukrainians advancing northeast of Novy Shlyakh can link up with the Ukrainians on the main front, they will surround thousands of Russians between them and the border,” Axe noted.

According to the analyst, the geographical conditions assist the Ukrainian Armed Forces in implementing this strategy. The Seym River forms a natural boundary along much of the northern edge of the potential pocket.

Ukrainian troops have destroyed all permanent bridges across the river, so the Russian army south of the river depends on temporary bridges or a narrow land bridge in the town of Korenevo. Thus, the Ukrainian Armed Forces constantly shell the pontoons that the Russians set up. They are also advancing on Korenevo to destroy the land bridge, Axe noted.

According to the analyst, the balance of forces in the Kursk region could also impact the success of the Ukrainians. Kyiv has deployed about 10,000 servicemen for a double-pronged attack on the Kursk region, while Moscow could have sent 38,000 troops to the area. The analyst notes that many Russians are poorly trained conscripts.

According to DeepState analysts, Russian troops in the village of Kremenoye in the Kursk region have been encircled since the start of the Kursk operation. Despite the encirclement, they are periodically resupplied with ammunition and provisions.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appealed to the UN, asking for humanitarian assistance in Russia's Kursk region.

According to the Financial Times, the Russian Federation has already sent 38,000 personnel, including assault brigades, to the Kursk region to counter the Ukrainian Armed Forces' advance, although the counterattack “has not yet been large-scale.”
