Trump can stop the war: how the meeting between Putin and Xi will influence US decisions.
According to FREEДOM:
Trump will consider the meeting between Putin and Xi
US President Donald Trump plans to take into account the results of the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in his next steps regarding the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. Putin will also participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. Thus, trade negotiations between China and the US, which may affect the situation in the region, remain active. This opinion was expressed by political analyst and international expert Oleksandra Filippenko on the FREEДОМ television channel.
SCO summit and Trump’s deadline
Filippenko emphasized that after the SCO summit in China, a celebration of the end of World War II is planned, which will take place on September 3. On that day, Putin will head to Beijing, where he may discuss important issues with Trump:
'And one can, of course, take a deep breath sadly, maybe even smile, saying that oh, how many ultimatums we have heard, how much of this has been. But somehow these ultimatums strangely coincide. Perhaps it accidentally happened this way. But they coincide with the moment when Vladimir Putin is supposed to go to Beijing. Perhaps Donald Trump will go to Beijing. We do not know now. Maybe there will indeed be some meetings,' — said Filippenko.
Nuclear disarmament
The political scientist noted that Trump recently reaffirmed the importance of discussing nuclear arsenal reductions. She stated:
'This topic really concerns him. The New START treaty (on measures for the reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms, — ed.) between Moscow and Washington expires in February 2026. These discussions must take place in one way or another. Or indeed the world may remain without control over strategic offensive weapons. In any case, Donald Trump seems to be focusing on this visit to Beijing and everything that will happen there. This summit will be held in Beijing at the end of August, and in early September, events will take place in connection with the anniversary of the end of World War II,' — she said.
China's influence on the situation
Filippenko believes that the further development of events will largely depend on China and the meetings in Beijing:
'We understand that China is a very serious beneficiary of the war. At the same time, China congratulates Ukraine on Independence Day, China talks about security guarantees for Ukraine, and so on. China is, of course, a very important player. If trade agreements between Washington and Beijing are concluded, if a warming of relations really occurs now, then pressure can also be expected from the US and China on the Russian side,' — expressed the opinion of the political expert.
The meeting between Putin and Xi reflects the growing role of China in world politics, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine. How relations between major powers develop will determine not only the situation in Ukraine but also the global political balance. Trump, approaching important international negotiations, intends to focus on nuclear issues, indicating the seriousness of his intentions in this area.
