New project 'Eden Project Morecambe'

According to The Sun: Work has begun on a new attraction, the opening of which is scheduled for 2028. Among its main features are a large biome, a cascading waterfall, and hanging gardens.

Construction of the 'Eden Project Morecambe' will start in the summer of 2026.

This new attraction, located near the beach in Morecambe, Lancashire, will cost £100 million and, according to representatives of the Eden Project, will 'transform Morecambe into a 21st-century resort.'

The attraction will be built on the site of the former Bubbles Leisure complex, which was predominantly submerged by the sea.

Specialists are conducting research to determine the depth of the sea wall and identify any possible obstacles left from the previous use of the site, particularly at the former Super Swimming Stadium location.

“Site research is a normal and necessary stage for a project of this scale, and we look forward to further progress to make 'Eden Project Morecambe' a reality,” said John Pye, project director.

New images have also been presented that allow for a detailed look at the attraction, set to open in late 2028, including the public garden 'Bring Me Sunshine,' designed based on ideas from local children.

Planned zones and elements

The 'Eden by the Bay' site will be mainly inspired by natural forms, beauty, and the efficiency of marine shells, according to the Eden Project concept. The attraction will include five zones: the large biome 'Realm of the Sun', 'Realm of the Moon', and three open gardens – the Garden of Four Seasons, the 'Bring Me Sunshine' Garden, and the Rhythmic Gardens.

In the 'Realm of the Sun', vertical gardening, hanging mini-gardens, a multisensory area, a cascading waterfall, a 20-meter sculpture of the Tree of Yew, and a 'Town Square' are planned.

“The 'Realm of the Sun' will be a 'bright, tropical landscape of the near future, where people have learned to restore and reconnect with the broken rhythms of the natural world,' the Eden Project adds.

Visitors will be able to interact with various exhibits, including living structures, as well as participate in storytelling sessions and workshops.

In the 'Realm of the Moon', visitors will find a darker space with a 'hyper-real stone pool', where accelerated tidal cycles will occur and new stories can be uncovered.

Project development prospects

In the 'Bring Me Sunshine' Garden, the Morecambe Military Memorial and a wishing well will be preserved, which are already on site. The Rhythmic Gardens may be used for public events and festivals in the future. Natural shelters for visitors will also be designed throughout the gardens.

There are also plans to showcase what the entrance to the attraction may look like, as well as a restaurant terrace overlooking Morecambe Bay.

Local residents may be offered free passes to visit the attraction after its opening. The first construction permits were issued back in 2022; however, a new plan will be submitted to Lancaster City Council on October 14.

In recent years, the plans for the new attraction have undergone changes. Initially, the project was set to open in 2026 with three biomes, which the project team is still considering for possible addition in the future.

Morecambe, located on the shores of the Irish Sea, has repeatedly earned the status of one of the cheapest towns in the UK, and Morecambe Beach has been recognized as one of the most beautiful according to Time Out.

In addition to Morecambe, other Eden Projects are planned to open in the UK, including one in Dundee in 2030 and another in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, which is likely to have the largest indoor playground in Europe, scheduled for this year.

Another Eden Project worth £32 million has also been announced, which is planned to be entirely underground.
