Why 160-170 Thousand Russian Troops Are Stalled on the Pokrovsk Front.
The Situation on the Pokrovsk Front
According to UATV: Ukrainian defenders continue to hold their positions on the Pokrovsk front, despite facing a massive Russian force of 160-170 thousand personnel. This front is a critical sector of the wider war, where Russia has concentrated significant resources for a major offensive. Even with such a numerical advantage, Russian troops have failed to capture the cities of Pokrovsk and Myrnograd, which remain under Ukrainian control. The situation remains intensely difficult as Ukrainian forces maintain an active defense.
As of January 28, 2023, Russia has suffered approximately 1,236,570 military personnel losses in its war against Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has noted that around 35,000 Russian soldiers are being killed each month. Faced with these staggering casualties, Russia attempted to bolster its forces by creating 14 new divisions but has only managed to assemble 7.
Ukrainian Defenders' Active Operations
General Ihor Romanenko emphasized that Ukrainian forces are continuing to eliminate about 35,000 Russian soldiers monthly. He also noted that Ukrainian defenders are holding their lines under extremely challenging conditions. Should a tactical withdrawal become necessary, the subsequent terrain consists of open steppes, which would complicate operations for advancing Russian troops.
President Zelenskyy has set a goal for Ukrainian forces to eliminate roughly 50,000 occupiers each month.
This objective underscores the serious and proactive approach Ukraine is taking in its defense and frontline operations. Therefore, despite the sheer number of Russian troops concentrated on the Pokrovsk axis, Ukrainian defenders continue to mount effective resistance and retain control over critically important territories.
The situation on the Pokrovsk front is a vital component of the overall war picture in Ukraine, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine demonstrate resilience and effectiveness against a backdrop of heavy enemy losses. Maintaining control of key cities is not only militarily significant but also holds strategic importance for future frontline developments. Given Russia's plans to form new divisions, the evolving events in this region could substantially influence the broader course of the conflict.
