Transformation of the Bricklayers Arms Bridge in London

According to The Sun: The Bricklayers Arms bridge in London could transform from a simple exit to something much more interesting.

The Southwark council is exploring the possibility of converting the bridge into

Motorists know the Bricklayers Arms as an important intersection on London's inner ring, where the new Kent Road meets the old Kent Road and Tower Bridge Road in Southwark.

The transport network could be reworked with a focus on pedestrians and cyclists.

This is not the first time the redesign of the bridge has been considered; before, it was proposed to dismantle it.

At one point, there were even plans to create an outdoor pool.

The local council stated:

“We will be exploring the possibility of reorganizing and improving the transport network, creating new housing, and restoring the historical part of the streets to integrate the facility with the surrounding areas, focusing on creating quality public space, improving accessibility, mobility, and green spaces.”

“The first step is gathering ideas and studying the needs of residents and businesses.”

Some plans propose transforming the bridge into a environment similar to New York, with a garden.

Public spaces with benches, picnic tables, as well as vases with plants and flowers are expected.

Without car traffic below, the bridge could be transformed into a climbing wall, and the space between levels into a skate park.

Experts are also discussing the creation of a public area between Great Dover Street and Tower Bridge Road.

Among the plans, there is also the creation of “an active pedestrian road” and “a tree-lined avenue”.

Many options still need to be discussed as several different ideas are being considered.

According to the schedules, the Bricklayers Arms bridge is to be replaced with a smaller intersection with a potential hanging park between 2030 and 2042.

Renovations are also underway at the London South Bank at the “Square” – former ITV offices.

Permission for the reconstruction of 72 Upper Ground was granted in December 2024.

The estimated cost is around £400 million, and the development images show green spaces and walking paths.

This hanging bridge will not be the first in the UK, as there is already a similar one in Manchester.

The Castlefield Viaduct was first built as a railway in 1893 and was in use until 1954.

The steel structure remained unused until 2022, when plans began for the third section of the 330-meter trail to be transformed into “gardens in the sky”.

After this, it is planned to extend it to the full length of the bridge – 330 meters.

This London project also involves a renovation for £73 million, which includes a beautiful park on the riverbank.

At the same time, a new Olympic lido with a sauna and “club” may appear in the British city.

London will soon have its hanging bridge in the style of New York, which may significantly change the face of the city and create new opportunities for recreation for residents and tourists.
