Which firewood is dangerous to burn at home: tips from foresters for winter

According to ТСН: Heating with wood remains one of the most reliable ways to warm up in winter, but not every log is suitable for home stoves or fireplaces. Choosing the wrong firewood can not only reduce heating efficiency but also threaten the health of residents or even cause a fire. Let's consider which firewood to avoid and how to store it properly.

What firewood can be dangerous for the home

Even if the wood was of high quality, improper storage conditions can create problems. Here are the main categories of firewood to avoid:

  • Treated and painted wood. Using old window frames, fence boards, or furniture scraps in the stove is strictly prohibited. During burning, paint, varnish, and preservatives emit dangerous toxins that can cause poisoning.

  • Resinous species (pine, spruce). Coniferous firewood contains a lot of resins that ignite quickly but also spark and shoot embers — this is dangerous for open fireplaces. The resin settles on chimney walls in the form of sticky soot, which can lead to self-ignition.

  • Wood with mold and mildew. If firewood has been stored in wet conditions, it may develop mold. Burning such wood fills the room with an unpleasant odor, and the spores of the fungus that enter the air negatively affect the respiratory system.

  • Rotten and old stocks. Firewood that has been lying for over five years loses its density, burns quickly, providing little heat, and only clogs the stove with ash.

Why wet firewood is a bad idea

Using freshly cut or wet wood can damage the heating system.

First, the energy of the fire is spent on evaporating water from the log, reducing heating efficiency.

Second, wet firewood produces a lot of smoke, causing the formation of condensate and creosote in the chimney. This not only reduces draft but also forces you to clean the pipes more often.

How to store firewood

To keep firewood effective and provide maximum heat output, it is important not only to stockpile it but also to properly organize the storage area. Here are a few key conditions that will help keep the wood in good condition during the heating season:

  • Reliable protection from precipitation. Any structure, whether it's a specially built woodshed or a temporary canopy, should protect the firewood from rain and snow to prevent moisture accumulation.

  • Insulation from contact with the ground. Stacking logs directly on the ground can lead to moisture absorption, which quickly causes mold growth. It is recommended to use a special pallet.

  • Ventilation. Firewood should not be stacked too tightly. Air should circulate freely between the rows, allowing the wood to 'breathe' and excess moisture to evaporate.

Preparing for winter is not just about the quantity of firewood but also its quality. Using verified fuel helps save money, keep the chimney clean, and the home cozy and safe.
