Does Taking on Extra Work Affect Teachers’ Draft Deferment? Authorities Clarify.
Deferment for Educators: Conditions and Key Points
According to Novyny.live: In Ukraine, teachers are legally entitled to a deferment from military mobilization, a provision that allows them to continue their professional duties during the wartime situation. This right is not exclusive to educators—medical workers also qualify, helping maintain essential services under conflict conditions.
To be eligible for this deferment, a teacher’s instructional workload must equal at least 75 percent of a full-time position. This means those working reduced hours may not meet the threshold. Additionally, the teacher’s data in the AIKOM system must be kept up to date. The responsibility for updating this information falls on the school director, who must ensure records are current to keep the deferment valid.
Yuriy Ayvazyan, an expert in mobilization legislation, stated: 'Additional work cannot affect the deferment if the necessary conditions for the right to deferment under Part 3 of Article 23 of the Law of Ukraine “On Mobilization Preparation and Mobilization” are met.'
As a result, the mobilization deferment plays a vital role in allowing educators to continue their work, thereby keeping the country’s educational system running during these difficult times. The rules governing this matter help ensure stability in the education sector and support teachers in fulfilling their responsibilities.
The Importance of Stability in the Educational Process
Amid active hostilities in Ukraine, maintaining stability in education is critically important. Granting teachers a deferment from mobilization helps retain skilled staff in schools and allows children to keep learning—an essential factor for the nation’s future. These measures reflect the recognition of education’s value even under challenging circumstances, as well as support for the professionals who play a key role in society.
