Ryanair may cancel flights to Vienna: what is known about the new threats to the airline.
Possible cancellation of Ryanair flights to Vienna
According to The Sun: The airline Ryanair is considering the possibility of canceling new flights to Vienna, just a few days after the decision to cancel millions of tickets for flights to Spain.
Last week, the low-cost carrier announced the stop of all flights to three airports in Spain – Tenerife North, Vigo, and Santiago.
Now the company plans to cancel flights to Vienna International Airport in Austria.
This decision may be caused by a 'harmful tax on airline tickets' which threatens to cancel flights.
This will not only complicate air travel but also jeopardize investments totaling 1 billion dollars planned in Austria.
Andreas Gruber, the CEO of Ryanair's subsidiary Laudamotion, noted: “Costs are too high. Countries like Hungary, Slovakia, or the Czech Republic do not have this.”
Currently, Ryanair operates flights to Vienna from Manchester, London Stansted, and Edinburgh at a price of about 25 pounds sterling per direction.
This move comes against the backdrop of Wizz Air's confirmation of flight cancellations to Vienna. From next month, flights from London Gatwick and from Bilbao to Vienna will be suspended.
The airline Wizz Air stated: “We can confirm that Wizz Air will gradually close its base in Vienna after a strategic review of its operations and fleet distribution.”
“Travelers who have bookings for flights affected by changes will be contacted directly to receive a full refund, WIZZ credits, or to transfer to an alternative Wizz Air flight.”
This route was launched back in 2022.
The situation is escalating as Ryanair sharply criticizes aviation taxes in Spain, which has led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson noted: “Ryanair remains committed to Spain, but we cannot justify further investments in airports, the growth of which is hindered by excessive and non-competitive fees.”
Additional cancellations are also possible, warned Ryanair chief Michael O'Leary.
“I will likely announce another million tickets that will be canceled next summer. If costs in regional Spain are too high, I will fly to other locations.”
Here are a few more destinations where flights may be canceled.
AlamyThe cancellation of Ryanair flights to Vienna is already part of a broader trend in the aviation industry, where rising fuel costs and taxes threaten low-cost models. Given this situation, businesses may reduce their flights or seek alternative routes to maintain competitiveness.
Watching the developments, one can see how these changes will affect travelers, as news of flight cancellations always raises concerns among passengers and can significantly alter their plans.
