Notably, not a single European brand appears among the top ten most economical cars in Europe, highlighting Japan's stronghold in the fuel-saving segment.
The findings come from a study by the Swedish automotive magazine ViBilagare, which examined a sample of 65,000 vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2023. The top ten most fuel-efficient cars in Europe include eight Japanese models and two from Korea:
- Mazda 2 Hybrid - 4.4 L/100 km
- Toyota Yaris - 4.6 L/100 km
- Toyota Yaris Cross - 4.6 L/100 km
- Honda Jazz - 4.9 L/100 km
- Kia Niro - 5.1 L/100 km
- Toyota Corolla - 5.2 L/100 km
- Toyota C-HR - 5.4 L/100 km
- Honda HR-V - 5.4 L/100 km
- Toyota Camry - 5.6 L/100 km
- Kia Picanto - 5.7 L/100 km
- Opel Corsa - 5.8 L/100 km (best European car)
- Skoda Fabia - approximately 6 L/100 km
These results confirm that Japanese hybrids offer superior fuel economy compared to European models, a factor that could significantly influence consumer choices moving forward.
This data points to the rising appeal of Japanese cars in the European market, especially amid climbing fuel prices and growing interest in green technologies. Automakers may need to ramp up their energy-efficiency efforts to stay competitive as consumer preferences shift.
