Bright garlands can be harmful: psychologists shared tips on how to avoid discomfort

According to ТСН: Bright garlands and flickering festive lights not only create a festive mood but can also cause discomfort for the eyes and nervous system. Psychologists shared tips on how to make Christmas visually comfortable for the whole family.

“We have long known that rapid flashing light can provoke epileptic seizures in people with heightened brain sensitivity, and for people with autism and migraines, such flickering becomes a source of discomfort and headaches,” experts note.

Rapid flickering of bulbs catches attention, but excessive stimulation can lead to fatigue, headaches, and eye irritation. This is especially true for people with sensory disorders and those suffering from migraines or epilepsy.

Experts recommend reducing the flickering frequency of bulbs, using static light instead of rapid flashes, and checking lamps for invisible flickering by recording video in slow motion.

Color and light temperature

When choosing white lighting for Christmas, there are two main options:

  • cool white — imitates daylight, stimulates attention and concentration;
  • warm white — resembles the morning or evening sun, soothes and creates a cozy atmosphere.

Warm white color is especially comfortable in cold weather, as it is perceived as “warmer” for the eyes and body. Cool light can irritate people with heightened sensory sensitivity.

Color influence

Traditional Christmas colors, such as red and green, can also be a source of discomfort. Red stimulates brain activity, which can quickly tire the visual system. Discomfort increases when red alternates with bright green or blue. It is better to choose shades of similar tones and avoid sharp contrasts.

The brightness of bulbs also affects perception: more intense light causes fatigue and discomfort more quickly.

Experts recommend reducing flickering frequency or turning off flashes, using warm shades of bulbs indoors, choosing less contrasting colors, and avoiding harsh red-green combinations, taking into account the sensory characteristics of guests. If necessary, certain decorations should be turned off.

Simple changes can help reduce eye strain and maintain a festive mood for all family members. Christmas decorations truly bring joy and create a festive atmosphere. By understanding how color, brightness, and flickering frequency affect people, one can make celebrations more comfortable and safe without losing the festive spirit.
