Ukrainian Air Force Disputes Report on Kyiv Power Plant Strike.
Strike Cripples Kyiv's Power Plants
According to Novyny.live: On January 13, a missile attack disabled several of Kyiv's thermal power plants (TPPs). According to Oleksandr Kharchenko, Director of the Energy Research Center, the assault involved ballistic missiles that struck facilities responsible for generating up to half of the city's electricity. At the time of the attack, Kyiv was already relying on external power supplies via high-voltage transmission lines.
Conflicting Accounts of the Attack
However, Yurii Ihnat, head of communications for the Ukrainian Air Force, contradicted the reported scale of the strike, stating that only two missiles were involved, not sixteen. Kharchenko also noted that a lack of adequate air defense systems allowed the Russian ballistic missiles to hit their targets. The resulting loss of heating and electricity prompted hundreds of thousands of residents to flee the city. This incident highlights the severe strain on Ukraine's energy grid and the critical importance of air defense for protecting civilian infrastructure during the ongoing war.
Kharchenko further clarified that the attack damaged a substation responsible for transmitting power from the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant. He reported that the substation was repaired and resumed operations within two to three days, restoring electricity to Kyiv.
This event underscores the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure in wartime and the vital role of air defense systems in protecting critical assets. Restoring power was a crucial step toward normalizing life in the capital, though the prolonged lack of electricity and heating is expected to have severe consequences for the population and the economy. The situation demands ongoing attention and monitoring by state authorities to ensure the stability of Ukraine's energy system.
