Events of March 20, 2023

According to UATV: A Russian assault on Ukraine's Sumy region on March 20, 2023, resulted in three fatalities and 13 injuries. The strikes hit multiple settlements, including the Velyka Pysarivka and Mykhailivka communities. In Velyka Pysarivka, a 62-year-old man was killed, while two men aged 37 and 33 lost their lives in Mykhailivka.

Reports indicate that 19 localities across the Sumy region came under attack. The weapons used included:

  • mortars
  • artillery
  • multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS)
  • FPV drones
  • unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
  • guided aerial bombs (KABs)

These strikes damaged residential houses, an administrative building, and a shopping center.

Attacks in Other Regions

Beyond Sumy, attacks also occurred in the Odesa and Kherson regions. In Odesa, two civilian vessels—flagged under Palau and Barbados—were damaged while loaded with grain. Oleh Kiper stated,

“the strikes damaged two civilian ships flying the flags of Palau and Barbados.”

In the Kharkiv region, the city of Chuhuiv was hit by UAV attacks. One residential building was completely destroyed, and ten others suffered partial damage. In Kharkiv city, one man was injured in the assault.

The situation across these regions remains tense, as ongoing shelling continues to harm civilian infrastructure and claim lives.

These events underscore the persistent danger faced by Ukraine's civilian population, as attacks on peaceful settlements persist and the war's toll on the economy deepens. Damage to infrastructure—particularly public buildings and grain-carrying vessels—could threaten regional food security and create additional humanitarian challenges. Continued international monitoring and support for affected communities remain essential.
