Austria Suggests EU Membership for Ukraine Could Be Part of Peace Talks.
Austrian and Ukrainian Foreign Ministers Hold Joint Press Conference
According to Novyny.live: On February 20, Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger and her Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, held a press conference to discuss Ukraine's bid to join the European Union. Meinl-Reisinger stated that the issue of EU accession could become a significant component of future peace negotiations, as there are security interests that must be addressed. She reiterated Austria's support for Ukraine's aspirations. This comes as Ukraine continues its defense against Russia's full-scale invasion, making its European future a central geopolitical issue.
Andrii Sybiha emphasized that Ukraine is actively working to fulfill the criteria for EU membership.
"Clear timelines are necessary,"he added, stressing the importance of certainty in the accession process. Austria, which maintains military neutrality, expressed its readiness to support Ukraine's path toward European integration.
Obstacles on the Path to European Integration
The press conference also highlighted the obstacle posed by Hungary, which has been blocking Ukraine's progress toward EU membership. In this context, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) was noted as a potential player in facilitating the peace process. Cooperation between countries and international organizations in this area is seen as critical for achieving regional stability and security.
The importance of support for Ukraine from Austria and other European states, particularly regarding its European ambitions, cannot be overstated. This issue remains a priority not only due to political interests but also considering the security situation in the region. Engagement with the OSCE could be a key element in overcoming existing hurdles, including those arising from Hungary's position, and ensuring progress in peace negotiations.
