Massive Disinformation Campaigns Target Azerbaijan: Key Details Emerge.
Azerbaijan's Battle Against Information Warfare
According to UATV: Azerbaijan is currently facing a wave of coordinated disinformation and cyber attacks, according to Hikmet Hajiyev, an aide to the country’s president. He stated that the nation has become the target of relentless false narratives and misleading content.
“We have become the target of intense attacks from disinformation and false information,” Hajiyev said.He stressed the critical need to counter these challenges, adding:
“Fighting disinformation is not easy, but we must speak the truth.”
New Security Initiatives and Media Outreach
In response to these threats, President Ilham Aliyev has ordered the creation of a National Cybersecurity Agency. This new body is designed to strengthen the country’s cyber defenses and address the growing information security risks it faces. For context, this move aligns with a broader global trend of governments establishing dedicated agencies to tackle digital threats.
Azerbaijan also recently hosted a major media forum, drawing over 150 journalists from 54 countries. The event served as a key platform for sharing expertise and discussing media freedom and information security. By fostering international dialogue, the forum aims to build resilience against disinformation and promote media literacy among the public.
The ongoing disinformation crisis highlights the urgency of information security for Azerbaijan, especially in an increasingly interconnected global media landscape. Initiatives like the new cybersecurity agency and the media forum reflect the government’s recognition that combating information threats and boosting public media literacy are essential for national security. These steps are expected to help stabilize the country’s information environment and reinforce its defenses against future attacks.
