New EU and UK Sanctions Target Russia: Who Is Now Blacklisted.
European Union Imposes Fresh Sanctions on Russia
According to UATV: On July 13, 2023, the European Union enacted a new round of sanctions against Russia, targeting 11 individuals and several companies. Among the firms blacklisted are developers of surveillance systems used by the FSB, as well as the popular social network 'VKontakte'. The EU sanctions list also includes the Makh app, highlighting the bloc’s focus on curbing Russian tech companies’ operations. These measures are part of ongoing Western efforts to pressure Moscow over its actions in Ukraine and beyond.
United Kingdom Announces Its Own Sanctions Package
Alongside the EU actions, the United Kingdom unveiled its separate set of restrictive measures against Russia. This package names 24 individuals and organizations accused of involvement in cyberattacks. These steps are part of a broader international push to counter cybersecurity threats and increase pressure on Russia in response to its conduct. The UK’s move aligns with similar actions by other Western allies to address digital aggression.
Among those hit by the new EU sanctions are the directors of Colony No. 10 in Mordovia. These measures underscore international bodies’ commitment to tackling human rights abuses and information security issues. By targeting specific figures and entities, the sanctions signal that the global community remains vigilant and prepared to act to uphold stability and security.
This development reflects the sustained pressure Western nations are applying to Russia in response to its activities in international security and human rights. The sanctions against particular individuals and companies also highlight worldwide concerns over cyberattacks and the use of technology for population surveillance. These actions could shape future relations between Russia and the European Union, as well as the broader international order.
