The GUR fighters evacuated 15 cats and kittens from Zmiinyi Island.

The fighters of the Main Directorate of Intelligence reported that they conducted a special evacuation from Zmiinyi Island, demonstrating the transport of cats and kittens on social media.

“The approaching winter frosts complicate the carefree life of numerous cats and kittens living on Zmiinyi Island. Therefore, the fighters of the 'Timur Special Unit' of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, who conducted patrols, decided to do an important deed - they evacuated 15 animals from the island to the 'mainland',” the message states.

“After adapting the rescued cats from the legendary Zmiinyi, anyone interested will have the opportunity to shelter one of them and arrange guardianship at the 'Sirius' shelter,” the GUR soldiers noted.

The intelligence officers also mentioned that the soldiers of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine and Ukrainian charitable foundations have been rescuing animals during the war more than once.

“During a combat operation in Kharkiv region this year, the servicemen of the 92nd Separate Mechanized Brigade discovered hungry owlets locked in a cage in a destroyed house. The birds were rescued and handed over to the care of the head of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov. The head of the special services, as known, loves animals: he has cats Gunther and Zmiiy, a frog named Petro, and canaries,” the message states.

In 2022, a kitten rescued by the military from Zmiinyi Island received a name and a new home. The fighters say that the cat became the talisman of the liberated island.

Let us remind you that the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the occupied Zmiinyi Island from the Russians on June 30, 2022. The Russians admitted the loss of control over the island, however, concocted a justification for this defeat - claiming it was a 'gesture of goodwill' in the context of problems with grain export from Ukraine.
