Most Moldovans oppose NATO membership, says Foreign Minister.
Moldova's NATO bid: what citizens think
According to Espreso.tv: Moldova's top diplomat, Mihai Popșoi, has stated that joining NATO hinges on the will of the people. A May survey by the iData polling firm found that 54.5% of Moldovans are against joining the North Atlantic Alliance, while 33.6% support integration.
Popșoi stressed that any decision on NATO membership must reflect public opinion.
“Joining NATO, like any other international body, depends on the will of our citizens,” he said.He also shared his personal view, noting, “I have always been open. For me, the North Atlantic Alliance means security.”
Developments in Moldova
In other news from Moldova, President Maia Sandu signed a decree stripping citizenship from two individuals born in Ukraine in 1970 and 1988. This move has sparked public discussion but is not directly tied to the NATO integration issue.
Popșoi’s stance on NATO membership highlights the government’s effort to balance foreign policy with domestic sentiment. Given the strong opposition, further steps may require deeper public dialogue, possibly including a referendum. This makes the NATO question a complex and multifaceted challenge that demands careful attention to citizens' views.
