How Much Cash to Keep at Home During a Power Outage

According to TSN.ua: In light of ongoing discussions about the risk of widespread power outages, or blackouts, experts in Ukraine are advising citizens to prepare for potential disruptions. They recommend keeping a cash reserve sufficient for one to two weeks of self-sufficient living. The suggested amount for this emergency fund is between 10,000 and 15,000 hryvnias, which would cover essential needs during prolonged electricity cuts. This guidance comes as the country's energy infrastructure remains a target amid the ongoing conflict.

Accessing Cash During a Blackout

Knowing how to obtain cash when the power is out is crucial. Several options may be available during such an event:

  • Designated bank branches that are part of the Power Banking network;
  • ATMs and self-service terminals located in these designated branches or in large supermarkets;
  • The "Cash at Checkout" service, available when paying with a card.

In a separate development, the government has planned new salary supplements for specific categories of workers, set to take effect in 2026. These increases are earmarked for medical professionals, educators, social workers, as well as specialists in the defense sector and critical infrastructure. Funding for these supplements is already allocated in the state budget for 2026.

With persistent threats to energy security, preparing for potential blackouts is increasingly important. Following expert advice on cash reserves helps improve public resilience to unforeseen circumstances. Meanwhile, the planned salary increases for vital professions aim to bolster the socio-economic situation by supporting key workers during a challenging period for the nation.
