Jam Press Jam PressBrazilian law enforcement initiated a large-scale investigation in collaboration with the London police when they discovered that Denis's passport and personal belongings were left in his Airbnb.
Denis, originally from Russia and a British citizen, was in the popular neighborhood of Gavea in Rio de Janeiro.
Disappearance of Denis
Four months after his disappearance, Brazilian police found Denis's body in Tijuca National Park. It was discovered on Tuesday after a prolonged search - 115 days.
The authorities stumbled upon his body in difficult terrain, where dense forests, rocks, and streams are present. Along with the body, they found his wallet, credit card, and other items.
Denis went missing on June 9 and failed to appear for a scheduled meeting at the Vista Chinesa viewpoint.
Surveillance cameras captured him wearing beige pants, a white shirt, a dark baseball cap, and a jacket at the time of his disappearance.
He was planning a trip to Sao Paulo the next day to meet an American friend.
Reactions from friends and family
One of Denis's closest friends, Pedro Campos, raised the alarm when he stopped sharing his travel experiences.
“He was messaging me, very excited about everything happening during his trip to Brazil and looking forward to his planned activities,” he recounts.
“When he disappeared, it was a shock, as he seemed so happy,” adds the friend.
Denis's mother, Olga, expressed her feelings:
“There are no words to describe the feelings of despair, anxiety, fear, and hope that parents go through in this situation.”
Local MP Neil Coyle also called for help, emphasizing that “he urgently needs to be found.”
Denis ordered a taxi on the day he went missing but canceled it, deciding to walk through the Tijuca forest instead.
At the time of his disappearance, the London police reported:
“Officers are supporting the investigation into the sudden disappearance of 33-year-old Denis Kapanov.”
Denis, as noted by his best friend Benon Mura, always shares news about his travels, so his disappearance has been “out of character.”
“He never traveled without informing those closest to him,” says Benon.
Researchers noted that data from his electronic device indicated he was moving normally until the last recorded location, after which the signal “suddenly disappeared.”
Brazilian police added:
“The sudden interruption of data supports the hypothesis of an unexpected event or external interference.”
