The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that Toretsk in the Donetsk region has been captured, which may affect the occupiers' advance in the Donetsk region. However, this victory was achieved at great cost, according to The Washington Post.

The Ukrainian government has officially not commented on the situation in Toretsk. The press officer of the 28th Brigade, Yevhen Alkhimov, stated that their unit continues to hold its positions and this would not be possible if the city had been captured. He also noted that Russian forces are conducting intense assault operations.

According to the DeepState map, as of the evening of February 7, 'Ukrainian troops were on the north-western outskirts of Toretsk and still had some soldiers inside the city itself.'

The Russian Ministry of Defense notes that 'Ukrainian forces have fortified Toretsk heavily and developed a network of underground communications, turning almost every building into well-protected firing positions.' Ukrainian troops have also used coal mines and spoil heaps as defensive structures.

Reuters reports that for the Russians, Toretsk is one of the main points of attack, along with Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka.

Ukrainian military analysts claim that the capture of Toretsk could significantly complicate the logistical situation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in much of Donbas.
