Overnight Strike on Odesa: Two Dead, Dozens Wounded, and a Church School Destroyed.
Odesa Under Attack: Aftermath and Reactions
According to UATV: Russia launched strikes on Odesa on July 16 and 17, killing two people and wounding ten others. The attacks targeted residential areas, damaging 11 homes, a church, a charitable foundation, and a church school. The bombardments have now continued for a week, heightening anxiety among city residents.
On July 16, the Russian military used aircraft-launched missiles to hit Odesa. The following day, at 5:00 a.m. on July 17, the city and its suburbs were struck by 'Banderol' type unmanned aerial vehicles. The July 16 attack left two dead and affected 11 residential buildings. Among the hardest-hit sites was a church school, where an explosion completely obliterated one classroom. The premises of a charity and a church were also damaged.
A security guard at the building suffered injuries from shattered glass during the shelling. Roman Medyanyk, a representative of the humanitarian headquarters, stated:
“The facilities where our humanitarian headquarters operated and distributed aid were damaged.” - Roman Medyanyk
Maryna Serdychenko, a representative of the church school, added:
“We are all in the same building—three large organizations. One classroom is destroyed; we will need to rebuild it.” - Maryna Serdychenko
These comments reflect the community's efforts to resume its work despite severe hardships. The week-long shelling of Odesa has caused widespread concern among the population, as people continue to suffer the consequences of aggression and the situation remains tense.
This attack is part of Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, which has led to numerous civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure. Given the sustained bombardment, local organizations and communities face major challenges in delivering humanitarian aid and rebuilding destroyed facilities like schools and churches. Ensuring the safety of residents and addressing their needs during this difficult period is now a top priority.
