Bulgaria demands EU ban on Ukrainian honey.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food of Bulgaria, Georgi Takhov, has appealed to the European Commission to take protective measures against the import of Ukrainian honey.

The Bulgarian minister's appeal was supported by Romania. Takhov emphasized at the EU Council meeting on agriculture and fisheries that the import of Ukrainian honey complicates the sale of local production and puts Bulgarian producers in a difficult position.

He noted that significant volumes of Ukrainian honey at very low prices entering the European market are putting strong pressure on the prices of Bulgarian honey. The minister added that the egg market in Bulgaria continues to experience interruptions due to a sharp increase in imports from Ukraine.

In addition to many problems in the beekeeping sector, over the past three years, the sector has also faced competition from imports from Ukraine. 'The volume of honey imports from Ukraine to our country increased by more than 30% from January to October 2024 compared to the same period last year. Finding a long-term solution is key to achieving stability and predictability in the sector. This solution must be balanced and reflect the interests of all parties,' emphasized Takhov.
