UK Navy to Establish Special Command for Seizing Russian Shadow Fleet Tankers.
New Royal Navy Command Unit
According to UATV: The UK's Royal Navy is establishing a dedicated command center to intercept and seize tankers from Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet.' This unit will specifically target vessels that are violating international sanctions. UK Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that the elite Special Boat Service will be deployed as part of this counter-operation.
Investment in Remote-Controlled Vessels
As part of this initiative, the command center will oversee the procurement of remotely piloted, unmanned surface vessels. These craft will be capable of patrolling areas up to 800 kilometers away, substantially extending the Royal Navy's operational reach for tracking and capturing sanctioned Russian oil tankers. This move comes as Western nations seek to tighten enforcement of the price cap on Russian oil, a key economic sanction.
These developments underscore the escalating tensions between the UK and Russia, particularly regarding the enforcement of international sanctions. The creation of this specialized command and the use of advanced drones could significantly enhance British capabilities in countering illicit maritime activity that supports the Russian economy. However, such assertive measures risk provoking a direct response from Moscow, potentially leading to further escalation of the conflict in the region.
