British Dictionary Named the Word of the Year 2024.
«Brat» became the word of the year 2024 according to the English dictionary Collins. This is stated on the Collins Dictionary website.
The new definition of the word «brat» appeared in 2024. It characterizes a person with a «confident, independent and hedonistic disposition».
The word gained popularity after the release of an album by British singer Charli XCX, who started the brat culture. It was also used by the team of US presidential candidate Kamala Harris in her election campaign to «revitalize» social networks and attract young voters.
««Brat» has different meanings for different people: it can be a sharp character, a bright aesthetic style, or even a campaign slogan. And though initially it was the title of a pop singer Charli XCX's album, «brat» clearly reflects the zeitgeist, which goes beyond the possibly short-lived but bright «brat-summer». Combining self-acceptance with rebelliousness, it is a fitting word for 2024», – notes the British dictionary.
It is noted that many of the words in this year's list are not entirely new, but they have gained new life by coming back into fashion for reasons. Besides the word «brat», first recorded around 1500
There were also other contenders for the word of the year in the English language:
- Delulu («deluded») – means inflated, detached from reality expectations.
- Brainrot – an apathetic state that can arise from long and aimless scrolling on social media.
- Romantasy – the name of a trend in the fantasy literary genre.
Let us remind you that the oldest American dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster named the word of the year 2023 the concept of «authentic» (authentic). The term «authentic» has several meanings, including «genuine, factual, authentic», as well as «true to one's own personality, spirit, or character». It is noted that authenticity is often associated with identity – national or personal.
