Ukraine to Shield Electrically Heated Homes from Power Cuts as Critical Infrastructure.
Ukraine's Energy Landscape
According to TSN.ua: In a move to protect residents during a severe energy crisis, the Ukrainian government is preparing to classify homes that rely on electric heating as critical infrastructure. This decision, being formalized by the Cabinet of Ministers, will exempt these residential buildings from scheduled power outages. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal, announced this policy on January 16.
Shmyhal stated that these homes will be added to the official list in the near future. This step is crucial as Ukraine's energy grid faces immense strain; Russian drone and missile attacks have left no thermal or hydroelectric power plant undamaged. To help meet demand, Ukraine has the capacity to import up to 2.3 GW of electricity from Europe, though daytime imports are currently using less than 30% of this available capacity.
Appeals for Energy Conservation
Denys Shmyhal has also urged businesses to switch off illuminated signs and advertisements to conserve power, highlighting the seriousness of the supply situation. The designation of electrically heated homes as critical infrastructure aims to ensure stable energy supply for the population during this difficult period and reflects the need for responsible consumption amid limited resources.
“Including electrically heated homes on the critical infrastructure list underscores the importance of energy security in Ukraine, especially under wartime conditions and constant threats to energy facilities.” - Denys Shmyhal
This government measure is designed to secure livable conditions for those dependent on electric heating and to reduce social tension. It represents an adaptive and urgent policy response to the challenges posed by the ongoing war, which has fundamentally reshaped the nation's energy realities.
