Rick Stein and his family announced the closure of the restaurant on High Street in Marlborough, which took place on Sunday, October 5.

He shared his feelings:

“As the economy looks not very good, people are not going out as often.”

The establishment could not generate profits similar to Rick's other restaurants, most of which are located in Cornwall.

After almost ten years on High Street, the famous venue is now seeking a new tenant.

The restaurant, which spans two levels and can accommodate 92 guests, is now available for rent, with prices to be determined.

The real estate agency Savills confirmed that the building has been leased for 20 years since February 2016, with an annual fee of £100,000, which will be revised according to market rates in 2026.

In their statement, the Stein family expressed gratitude to the Marlborough community for their support.

“After long reflection, we are very sad to announce that our restaurant in Marlborough is closing,”

said the press secretary.

“We sincerely thank everyone who dined with us and supported us over the years – we enjoyed being part of the Marlborough community.”

CLOSURES

This chef has about a dozen restaurants in the UK and Australia.

Rick runs a successful culinary group with his ex-wife Jill and their sons Jack, Charlie, and Ed.

The group expressed hope that it could avoid closure since the restaurant in Marlborough was not operating as effectively as others.

Rick Stein's press secretary told Gazette and Herald: “We can confirm that we are closing our restaurant in Marlborough and are consulting with the team to explore whether this can be avoided.”

“Our other restaurants and rooms continue to perform well, however this particular location has not delivered the same level of income.”

Five years ago, in 2020, the restaurant was saved from closure after a rent reduction.

39 staff members who were issued notices got their jobs back after a 25% reduction was agreed upon.

At the time, Rick noted: “I am glad that our landlord in Marlborough made such a generous offer. I was ready to lose the restaurant and our wonderful team, so I am very happy that we can reopen.”

Then an anonymous landlord stated that the generous offer was the “right thing to do,” but the restaurant still faces difficulties.

The television chef's restaurant in Marlborough opened in 2016 and is located in a building designated as a Grade II listed building – Lloran House.

It offers some of his most famous dishes, such as salt-baked mackerel and Dutch treat.

However, income from his business, which also includes shops, a culinary school, and an online presence, dropped last year.

CAFE CLOSURE

This happened just a few weeks after his café “on the go” in Padstow, Cornwall, was closed permanently.

Rick made this unexpected decision to streamline the business and reduce overhead costs.

The press secretary of Rick Stein confirmed to The Sun: “We can confirm that we have closed our small café, and three team members were offered alternative positions in the business.”

The representative added: “Rick Stein's Michelin-starred café remains open, offering the same coffee from Cornish roasters Origin Coffee, as well as lunch and dinner menus inspired by Rick's travels and his passion for fresh, simple ingredients, many of which are sourced from local producers.”

In a previous interview, Rick criticized finance minister Rachel Reeves for her tax hike in the budget.

He expressed his outrage:

“As the economy looks not very good, people are not going out as often.”

“So the one thing you shouldn't do is impose heavy taxes on those sectors that actually produce something.”

The closure of Rick Stein's restaurant is yet another significant signal for the food industry, which is struggling with economic instability. Declining revenues and reduced foot traffic are becoming a reality for many establishments amid today's challenges. The chef, who rose to fame through his culinary talents, is forced to seek new ways to adapt to market conditions and sustain his gastronomic empire.
