Rick Stein's restaurant in the UK faces closure again: details.
Possible closure of Rick Stein's restaurant
According to The Sun: The popular restaurant of the famous chef Rick Stein, who gained significant fame through the BBC, may close its doors forever. This comes just five years after the establishment was saved from closure.
Rick Stein owns about a dozen restaurants in the UK and Australia. However, his establishment in Malborough, located in Wiltshire, is not showing success compared to other restaurants, and its future looks bleak.
Representatives of the restaurant chain stated that they hope to avoid closure but are consulting with the team about the possibility of permanent closure.
“We can confirm that we are considering closing our restaurant in Malborough and consulting the team to explore if this can be avoided.”
“Our other restaurants continue to operate successfully, but this particular establishment has not generated the same level of income.”
Rick Stein, 78, manages his successful restaurant group along with his ex-wife Jill and sons Jack, Charlie, and Ed. Most of his restaurants in the UK are located in Cornwall.
The restaurant in Malborough opened in 2016 and is housed in a historically significant building — Lloran House. Here, some of Stein's most famous dishes are served, such as sole fillet in cream sauce and turbot with hollandaise sauce.
Five years ago, in 2020, the establishment was saved from closure when the landlord agreed to a rent reduction. At that time, 39 employees who had been notified of layoffs returned to work after agreeing to a 25% pay cut.
“I am very grateful that our landlord in Malborough made such a generous offer. I was prepared to lose the restaurant and our wonderful team, and I am very pleased that we can reopen.”
“I believe this is a wonderful place in a beautiful market town. Kate, Ed, and I have put a tremendous amount of thought into the look and feel of Rick Stein in Malborough, and I am relieved that we can reopen.”
At the time of the announcement of possible closure, an anonymous landlord noted that the generous offer was 'the right thing to do', but the restaurant continues to face financial difficulties.
The latest reports submitted to Companies House on September 23 showed that Stein’s Trading Limited incurred an operational loss in 2024. The report also indicated that the parent company The Seafood Restaurant Padstow Limited also reported a loss.
The restaurant business has not commented on the situation yet.
This is not the only restaurant facing financial difficulties — it was recently revealed that one Michelin-starred restaurant is closing permanently after six years of operation.
The restaurant Pophams in London will close on October 30, although it was launched as a bakery and evening pasta concept in 2019.
Last month, Channel 4 chef Dom Taylor announced the closure of his Marvee’s Food Shop in Ladbroke Grove, West London, due to 'unforeseen circumstances'.
This Caribbean restaurant opened just a few months ago, in May, as part of the music and events space UNDR, near the famous Portobello Road.
AlamyThe potential closure of Rick Stein's restaurant highlights the overall financial difficulties in the restaurant business that arise from market changes. Competition among dining establishments is increasing, and the struggle to retain customers is becoming increasingly challenging. The restaurant in Malborough, although it has been well-known, is currently going through tough times, indicating the complexity of survival in the food service industry.
