Ukraine Denies Russian Claims of Capturing Kupiansk

According to UATV: On January 27, 2023, Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, operating under the National Security and Defense Council, refuted claims made by the Russian Federation that its forces control the cities of Kupiansk and Kupiansk-Uzlovyi. The Center stated that these settlements remain under Ukrainian control, directly contradicting information disseminated by the Russian General Staff.

Andrii Kovalenko, a representative of the Center, described the Russian claims of capturing Kupiansk-Uzlovyi as

'a rather amusing lie'
. He asserted that both Kupiansk and Kupiansk-Uzlovyi are firmly held by Ukrainian defenders. Kovalenko added that the information being relayed to the Kremlin is false and that the Russian military command is misleading President Vladimir Putin by asserting control over Kupiansk.

Intense Fighting Continues in Eastern Ukraine

In related developments, the Center reported that over the past day, Ukrainian forces eliminated 820 Russian occupiers. The fighting also resulted in the destruction of significant Russian military hardware, including:

  • one tank
  • three armored combat vehicles
  • two multiple rocket launcher systems
  • 47 enemy artillery systems

These figures highlight the intensity of combat in the region and further undermine Russian assertions of territorial control.

The situation underscores the ongoing, fierce battles in eastern Ukraine, where territorial control remains hotly contested. The reported high Russian casualties suggest an active and robust Ukrainian defensive strategy, which could influence the future tactical decisions of both sides. In a conflict where information is a key battleground, such official Ukrainian rebuttals are a critical part of the wider strategic effort. Analysts note that the Kupiansk area has been a focal point of the frontline since Ukraine's successful Kharkiv counteroffensive in late 2022.
