Due to poisoning in McDonald's, fast food chains are removing onions from the menu.
Fast food chains in the USA have decided to remove onions from the menu due to an outbreak of illnesses caused by E. coli that occurred at McDonald's. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 49 cases of intestinal infection were identified in ten states, which resulted in the death of one person. Victims have already filed two lawsuits against the company.
McDonald's decided to remove onions from its menu as they might be the cause of the problem. Other fast food chains, such as KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Burger King, have also removed onions from their offerings. Additionally, McDonald's supplier withdrew several types of onions from sale.
As a result of this scandal, McDonald's shares fell by 6.5% with the publicity of the poisoning and by 10% following the CDC's publication. Some strains of E. coli can lead to serious complications, such as kidney failure, which harms the company's reputation. One resident of Colorado filed a lawsuit against McDonald's due to burger-induced poisoning.
It is worth noting that former US President Donald Trump worked at McDonald's during the election campaign, but afterward, the company stated it does not support any of the US presidential candidates.
