Oulu – a new cultural center of Europe in 2026
According to The Sun: The Finnish city of Oulu has been named a 'potential cultural capital of Europe 2026' according to the Not Hot List 2026 by Intrepid. This city is famous for its unusual events, including the World Air Guitar Championship, and attracts tourists with its originality.

Summer in Oulu is special – you can see people in wetsuits swimming in the Baltic Sea. In winter, tourists ride fat bikes and snowshoes across serene snowy landscapes. In 2025, the city even topped the UN World Happiness Report.
Oulu offers a variety of autumn events. In September, there will be a Taste Festival where you can sample dishes from local restaurants. Next, the Irish Festival with live music and dancing will take place, and in November, the city will host the Lumo Light Festival.

Hotels in Oulu are accessible for visitors, and the most expensive meals in restaurants can cost up to €63.80 (£55.36) for a full lunch. Travelling by train from Helsinki to Oulu takes about five hours at a cost of around £85.
The easiest way to reach Oulu is by flying from Helsinki, with ticket prices starting at £44. In summer, temperatures can reach 20°C, while the coldest month is January, when the thermometer can drop to -15°C.
