Moldova's CEC showed the results of the EU accession referendum.
EU supporters seized a narrow victory in the Moldovan referendum
In Moldova, 99.5% of the votes in the constitutional referendum on EU accession have been counted. According to the voting results, 50.41% of voters supported European integration, while 49.59% were against. The difference was only 12,243 votes. With this referendum, Moldova will have European integration in its basic law.
Nevertheless, this positive result was made possible due to the support of the diaspora, as residents of Moldova mostly voted against closer ties with the EU. The opposition was particularly strong in Gagauzia, where 95% of voters opposed European integration. Even in Chisinau, the capital of the country, 44% of voters were against.
The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, expressed her outrage that the elections and referendum were not fair and that there was actual vote-buying. She also noted the "unprecedented attack on freedom and democracy" from criminal groups and foreign forces.
