Southern Ukraine's Water Crisis Costs Farmers $300 Million Annually.
Water Scarcity Grips Southern Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Farmers in southern Ukraine are facing a severe water shortage, leading to annual losses of approximately $300 million due to a lack of irrigation. This crisis, driven by climate change and the ongoing war, is causing substantial economic damage to the agricultural sector. With grain crops requiring around 700 mm of rainfall to mature, agricultural output on irrigated land has plummeted by 89%, drastically reducing the nation's overall farm production. This region, often called the nation's breadbasket, is critical for both domestic food security and global grain exports.
Over the past three decades, Ukraine's average temperature has risen by 1.2°C, creating harsher growing conditions. As a result, grain and legume production has collapsed from 608.9 thousand tons to just 44.4 thousand tons. Oilseed crop yields have also seen a dramatic fall, dropping from 588.5 thousand tons to 13.1 thousand tons. Vegetable production has suffered similarly, declining from 910 thousand tons to 140 thousand tons.
Compounded by War and Climate Pressures
The situation has been severely worsened by the war. Since the full-scale invasion began, 230 instances of damage to dams, bridges, and water supply systems have been documented, further restricting access to water resources. The country has lost roughly one-third of its water reserves, with the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant alone resulting in the loss of 18.2 km³ of water. Currently, an estimated 6 million people lack access to clean drinking water, highlighting the severity of the humanitarian and agricultural emergency.
Confronted with these immense challenges, farmers in southern Ukraine must adapt to a new reality. Key steps to address the problem could include:
- Implementing a national water strategy through 2050;
- Developing nine river basin management plans for the 2025–2030 period.
This crisis underscores the urgent need for a strategic approach to water management in Ukraine. Amidst the dual pressures of a changing climate and wartime infrastructure damage, finding effective solutions to provide water for agriculture is essential for supporting food security. The development of new policies and programs will be critical for the recovery of the agricultural sector and ensuring stability in the region.
