Heavenly Hundred Heroes Day
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine observes Heavenly Hundred Heroes Day on February 20th, a solemn commemoration of those killed during the Revolution of Dignity. This date has become a powerful symbol of the courage and sacrifice of people who gave their lives for democratic change in the country. The observance serves to remind society of the tragic events of February 2014, when security forces opened fire on protesters on Institutska Street in Kyiv. The Revolution of Dignity was a pivotal series of protests that led to the ousting of a pro-Russian president and set Ukraine on a new geopolitical course.
February 20, 2014, stands as one of the bloodiest days of that revolution. Dozens of people died that day, later collectively named the Heavenly Hundred. This term encompasses 107 participants who lost their lives for freedom and dignity. The fallen ranged from the young to the elderly. The youngest victim was 17-year-old Nazarii Voitovych, while the oldest was 82-year-old Ivan Nakonechnyi. Among the 107 were three women: Antonina Dvorianets, Olha Bura, and Liudmyla Sheremet.
The History of the Heavenly Hundred
The history of the Heavenly Hundred began on December 22, 2013, with the death of the first victim, Pavlo Mazurenko. The last member of the Heavenly Hundred to pass away was Viktor Orlenko, who died on June 3, 2015. Commemoration of these heroes occurs at various levels. For instance, the first official mention of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes appeared on the Government Portal on February 28, 2014. Then, on February 20, 2015, the president signed a decree 'On Honoring the Feat of the Participants of the Revolution of Dignity and Perpetuating the Memory of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes'.
During the days of intense clashes between protesters and security forces, which lasted from February 18 to 22, 2014, Ukrainians defended their rights and freedoms. These days forever changed Ukraine, becoming a decisive stage in the struggle for its independence. Today, by honoring the memory of the Heavenly Hundred, Ukrainians not only recall tragic events but also acknowledge the price of independence paid by their compatriots.
The Heavenly Hundred Heroes Day is an important reminder that freedom and dignity often demand the ultimate sacrifice. The Avenue of the Heavenly Hundred in Kyiv has become a place of memory and tribute to the heroes who laid down their lives for a better future for Ukraine.
