Twelve Years Ago: The Day Thousands Mobilized to Defend Crimea.
Crimea Resistance Day: Marking Opposition to Russian Occupation
According to UATV: Ukraine observes Crimea Resistance Day on February 26, a date of profound significance marking the mass protests against the peninsula's changing status twelve years ago. This anniversary serves as a powerful symbol of civilian defiance. The events of February 26, 2014, left a deep and lasting imprint on the history of Ukraine and the Crimean Tatar people. The day commemorates the initial, largely non-violent resistance that preceded the military takeover.
The 2014 Protest Movement
On February 26, 2014, thousands gathered in Simferopol outside the Crimean parliament building to protest an extraordinary parliamentary session. Eyewitness estimates placed the crowd size between 5,000 and 10,000 people. The demonstrations were marked by high tension, leading to a crush and violent clashes near the parliament walls. Tragically, two people lost their lives and dozens were injured during these events.
The following day, February 27, 2014, Russian military forces seized the buildings of the Crimean parliament and government. This act marked the beginning of the peninsula's unlawful annexation. An illegal 'all-Crimean referendum' was held on March 16, 2014, followed by the signing of a document in Moscow on March 18 to formally incorporate Crimea into the Russian Federation.
- Following the annexation, conditions on the peninsula deteriorated significantly.
- 511 individuals have become political prisoners in Crimea, 276 of whom are from the Crimean Tatar community.
- 61 people have been killed, including 29 Crimean Tatars.
- 29 individuals remain missing, 19 of them Crimean Tatars.
Crimea has since been transformed into a major military hub for Russia. The illegal annexation has resulted in the forced imposition of Russian citizenship, laws, and systems of governance, a situation condemned by the United Nations.
"It was a terrifying morning on the 27th, when you wake up to a call from a neighbor who was told not to go to work," recalls Gulnara Abdulayeva about those events.
Crimea Resistance Day serves as a reminder of the critical importance of defending human rights and Ukraine's territorial integrity. It also honors the resilience and courage of the Crimean Tatar people in their struggle for their rights.
Commemorating this day underscores the ongoing consequences of the peninsula's annexation for all Crimean residents, particularly the Crimean Tatars, who have faced systematic repression and persecution. This date highlights the necessity of continued international support for Ukraine regarding territorial integrity and human rights, and the vital importance of preserving the memory of these events for present and future generations.
