February 26, 2014: The Day Thousands Mobilized in Defense of Ukraine Against Crimea's Occupation.
Crimea Resistance Day: Marking the Opposition to Occupation
According to UATV: February 26 is commemorated as the Day of Resistance to the Occupation of Crimea by Russia. This date holds profound significance for Ukrainians. In 2014, thousands gathered outside the parliament building in Simferopol to assert Crimea's status as part of Ukraine. As noted by Riza Shevkiiev,
“February 26 is a day that is fixed in my memory annually.”The very next day, on February 27, 2014, Russian military forces seized government buildings in Crimea, including the Supreme Council and the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. This swift escalation marked the beginning of a military takeover that shocked the international community.
An estimated 250,000 to 300,000 Crimean Tatars lived in Crimea prior to 2014. This community played a crucial role in resisting the occupation. Gulnara Abdulayeva emphasized that
“the majority of people in Crimea never mass-supported Russia.”Following the start of the occupation, many Crimean Tatars and other residents were forced to leave their homeland. For instance, in March 2014, Oksana Novikova's family relocated to Lviv.
Events Following the Occupation
Resistance Day also serves as a reminder of the events in the subsequent months. An illegal referendum on Crimea's status was staged on March 16, 2014, drawing widespread international condemnation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated:
“Crimea was and remains part of Ukraine. The struggle for its de-occupation continues.”This fight to restore Ukraine's territorial integrity persists to this day, with the international community continuing to support Ukrainian sovereignty.
Paul Johnson, a representative of Sweden, affirmed this support:
“Sweden does not set geographical limits on the use of provided assistance to defend Ukraine's sovereignty.”
The Day of Resistance to the Occupation of Crimea stands as a powerful symbol of the struggle for human rights and Ukraine's territorial integrity. These events remain etched in the memory of many Ukrainians, underscoring the necessity to continue the fight for freedom and justice.
Recent years have demonstrated that the issue of Crimea remains relevant not only for Ukraine but for the international community as a whole. The sustained support from other nations, alongside the efforts of the Ukrainian government to regain control of the territory, highlights the ongoing importance of this process. Thus, Crimea Resistance Day becomes not merely a day of remembrance but also a call to action, urging continued and active international cooperation to restore justice.
