Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language: History, Holiday Traditions, and Greetings.
Today, October 27, marks the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, which is an important event in the cultural life of Ukraine. The holiday aims to raise awareness of the importance of the Ukrainian language as the foundation of national identity.
History of the Holiday
The Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language was established in 1997 by the decree of the then President Leonid Kuchma. The holiday was created in support of the initiative of public organizations and falls on the day of honoring the memory of the Venerable Nestor the Chronicler. Until 2023, the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language was celebrated annually on November 9.
However, on July 28, 2023, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree changing the date of the holiday from November 9 to October 27. This is associated with the transition to the new Julian calendar, since the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language is established as the day of honoring the memory of the Venerable Nestor the Chronicler.
"In support of the initiative of public organizations and taking into account the important role of the Ukrainian language in consolidating Ukrainian society, I decree: To establish in Ukraine the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, which is to be celebrated annually on October 27 in honor of the memory of the Venerable Nestor the Chronicler", the president's decree states.
Celebration Traditions
- On the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, people usually bring flowers to the monument of Nestor the Chronicler.
- Since 2000, on the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, the "Dictation of National Unity" is broadcast live on Ukrainian Radio, which can be written by anyone willing.
- Also on this day, the International Competition of Ukrainian Language Experts named after Petro Yatsyk is held, in which over 5 million people from 20 countries participate annually.
- Previously, there was a tradition when parents would take their children to school, then go to church, light a candle in front of the image of Nestor the Chronicler, and pray for the child's success in education.
- In addition, on this day, the best promoters of the Ukrainian language are honored, support is provided to publishing houses that release Ukrainian-language literature, and thematic regional competitions are held.

Poems for the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language
Together with happiness and sorrow, the green leaf rustles, it shines brightly in the clear sky over the water, our native language gleams.
This is a symbol of your wisdom, my Ukraine. It burns! Therefore, cherish your native language without hesitating for a moment!
K. Kovryk
Each bird sings in its own way, each nation speaks in its own way.
For me and my people, the Ukrainian language is wonderful, our own, motherly.
I will carry it as a holy thing in purity and protect it while I live, with sincere love, as a faithful son. This language is my only mother.
S. Zhupanin
Once my mother told me: 'You can know many languages, respect each language, but keep one of them in your heart.'
In my heart, tender and pleasant, I will keep my native language!
M. Khorosnytska
Great, generous
