January 24 is celebrated as the Day of Ukrainian External Intelligence. Although the history of Ukrainian external intelligence spans more than a century, the official professional holiday of this structure was established in 2018.

The history of the holiday - the Day of Ukrainian External Intelligence

Every year, on January 24, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Ukrainian External Intelligence. Ukrainian external intelligence has existed for over a hundred years, yet the holiday of this structure was established only in 2018 by the decree of then President Petro Poroshenko.

«Considering the significant contribution of employees of the intelligence agencies of Ukraine to the protection of the national interests of Ukraine from external threats, as well as the life, health of its citizens, and state property abroad, strengthening the defense capability of the state, in order to revive national intelligence identity and establish modern traditions of honoring the achievements of Ukraine's external intelligence, I decree: to establish in Ukraine the Day of Ukrainian External Intelligence, which shall be celebrated annually on January 24», - the decree states.

This date was chosen considering historical events: it was on January 24, 1919, during the Time of the Directory of the Ukrainian People's Republic, that the first nationwide external intelligence unit was created. It was responsible for collecting information about the enemies of the UPR and studying the possibilities of cooperation or opposition with other countries.
