Trump Pressures Europe: The US Demands Painful Concessions from Ukraine

According to ТСН: Tensions are rising between Washington and European capitals over differing approaches to ending the war in Ukraine. US President Donald Trump insists on an immediate ceasefire with conditions that require significant concessions from Kyiv, resulting in European allies being pressured to support his position.

Zelensky 'Must' Accept the Conditions

A phone call recently took place between Trump and the leaders of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Sources report that the conversation was 'tense'.

Trump directly told German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other leaders that they 'must pressure Zelensky' to agree to the terms of the American peace plan.

The main points of this plan that face the most resistance in Kyiv:

  • significant territorial losses (de facto recognition of occupation),

  • limitations on the size of the Ukrainian army.

Trump also reiterated his criticism of Zelensky, stating that he 'has not read' the previous American plan, and made it clear that he has no intention of revising the conditions proposed by Washington.

The Position of Europe and Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reported that Ukraine and European allies have given Trump their response to his proposals, hoping to expedite ceasefire negotiations. Merz wishes to meet with Trump this coming weekend to discuss the differences.

'Europe wants to achieve a ceasefire and stop the killings in Ukraine, ensuring this with reliable security guarantees, but do so while preserving Europe’s security interests.'

The Main Obstacle — Territories

The publication notes that there are 'significant gaps' between the parties, particularly regarding territories. Moscow demands that Ukraine withdraw its troops from the entire Donetsk region, which it has been unable to seize by force.

Zelensky categorically rejects the possibility of a unilateral transfer of territories.

'Zelensky has long stated that as president he cannot unilaterally decide the fate of Ukrainian territories — this must be approved by the Ukrainian people.'

Sociological data also confirms the complexity of the situation: according to a survey conducted in the fall, 54% of Ukrainians opposed any territorial concessions, even if it means prolonging the war.

It should be noted that Zelensky openly commented on the course of peace negotiations, calling this stage 'the most difficult last mile'. He noted that Russia fears Trump’s pressure but does not strive for peace.

This situation underscores the choice Ukraine faces: on one hand — pressure from international partners, and on the other — the will of its own people. Zelensky's position and the determination of Ukrainians may become decisive factors in further negotiations.
