To Avert Nuclear Risk, the West Must Show Putin a United Front, Says Edward Lucas.
Why Western Unity on Ukraine Matters
According to Espreso.tv: Security expert and author Edward Lucas recently stressed the need to counter Russian information warfare and psychological operations. During an interview on the Espreso and Slawa.TV channels, he argued that a cohesive Western response in supporting Ukraine is essential to deterring Russian aggression. Lucas also addressed China's position, noting that Beijing does not want Moscow to resort to nuclear weapons.
Assessing the Nuclear Threat
Anton Borkovsky, host of the program 'Studio West,' asked Lucas to estimate the likelihood of Russia using nuclear arms. Lucas put the odds at 50-50 but added that
the actual probability of Putin deploying nuclear weapons remains very low. Still, he emphasized that demonstrating Western solidarity during this tense period is crucial, stating:
Right now, the most important thing is to show Putin our unity.
The conversation also touched on Jake Sullivan, a Biden administration official, who has similarly highlighted the need for global coordination in response to Russian threats. Meanwhile, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, claimed that European leaders at the G7 summit were 'feeding' the U.S. president 'harmful ideas'—a remark that suggests growing friction between Western nations and Russia.
Lucas therefore calls for proactive Western measures to counter Russian influence and preserve regional stability. The situation remains highly volatile, and a unified Western stance on security is a critical factor in curbing Russian aggression, particularly amid concerns over possible nuclear escalation. Given the statements from both sides, further diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region can be expected.
