What you need to know about buying a car from the USA - expert tips

Automotive expert Yevhen Yermolov talked about three key moments that Ukrainians should consider when buying a car from the USA. These moments can significantly affect the cost and success of the transaction.

The first moment is choosing a reliable intermediary. Yermolov recommends finding a dealer who can help facilitate the purchase, as it is technically impossible to do this independently.

The expert warns against purchases from private individuals and unofficial dealers, as it is unknown what manipulations have been carried out with the vehicle. 'You will never know about it until you receive the vehicle,' he warns.
The second moment is checking the vehicle's documentation. Yermolov advises ensuring that these documents allow the car to be exported through Europe to Ukraine.
The third moment is the vehicle's location in the USA. Yermolov notes that it is possible to buy a car a thousand kilometers from the port and the cost of transporting it to the port may equal the sea freight cost.

The expert also emphasizes the importance of checking the car's year of manufacture. He warns that sometimes a car sold as a 2020 model might actually be a 2019 model. To verify the year of manufacture, it is recommended to purchase Carfax, where the first registration date of the vehicle can be found.

After considering these three moments, it will be necessary to address the customs clearance issues. Yermolov reminds that a car cannot enter Ukraine until the advance payments for customs clearance are paid.

The expert advises to calculate all expenses in advance, including the cost of the car, delivery, customs clearance, and possible repairs. It is advisable to set aside an additional amount for repairs, as it is impossible to accurately assess the repair costs based on photographs.

Let us remind you that drivers can re-register the vehicle online.
