EU strengthens sanctions against Russia

The European Union has decided to increase its sanctions pressure on Russia by introducing new restrictions in the energy and finance sectors. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced a ban on 'Nord Stream-1' and 'Nord Stream-2', as well as a price reduction on Russian oil.

In particular, there will be a complete ban on any operations with the 'Nord Stream' pipelines.

The expanded sanctions list will include over 70 vessels from the Russian 'shadow fleet' to avoid circumvention maneuvers through maritime transport. A complete SWIFT blockade for 22 Russian banks is also planned, along with the expansion of prohibitions on financial operations in third countries.

As a result of the new restrictions, the EU aims to further impact the Russian economy and support Ukrainian sovereignty in the context of the conflict in Donbas.
