EU Deliberates Over New Sanctions Package

According to UATV: The European Union is currently discussing its 21st round of sanctions against the Russian Federation, which would introduce fresh restrictions and expand existing blacklists. These talks are scheduled to take place within the Council of the European Union on July 15. Just days earlier, on July 13, a previous set of sanctions came into effect, blacklisting 11 Russian citizens and several companies—including developers of surveillance systems, the social network VKontakte, and the messaging app Viber. The measures also target Penal Colony No. 10 in Mordovia.

Key Points Under Discussion

This new package includes restrictions on 90 Russian banks and 11 cryptocurrency platforms. The EU also plans to update its sanctions lists to include 250 additional individuals and entities, signaling a continued effort to pressure Russia's economy. A central topic of debate is the approval of a price cap on Russian oil. As expert Vitaliy Syzov notes:

“The discussions are ongoing. It is expected that a decision to freeze the price ceiling on Russian oil will be reached on July 15.” - Vitaliy Syzov

Additionally, the EU is considering a ban on entry for Russian combatants and a prohibition on importing fish from both Russia and Belarus. These steps are designed to intensify economic pressure on the aggressor nation. Syzov also highlighted:

“However, certain measures will be put in place, meaning that protection will only be granted to Ukrainian citizens who can prove they have no military service obligations to Ukraine.” - Vitaliy Syzov

The bloc intends to expand its list of vessels in Russia's shadow fleet by 30 ships, underscoring its focus on preventing sanctions evasion. Temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees has been extended until March 2028, reflecting the EU's commitment to supporting Ukrainians affected by the war and ensuring safe living conditions in Europe.

These discussions signal the EU's ongoing strategic pressure on Russia amid the protracted conflict in Ukraine. The expansion of sanctions lists and new restrictions could significantly impact Russia's economy and its international relations. At the same time, the extension of temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees highlights the EU's dedication to aiding those displaced by the war and providing them with secure circumstances in Europe.
