EU prepares to revise the temporary protection directive

The European Union plans to revise the temporary protection directive for Ukrainians seeking asylum from the war. Initially, this directive allowed only two extensions, but it might now be extended until March 2026.

It is expected that a new proposal regarding the status of Ukrainians will be presented in June. According to EU diplomats, various 'exit strategies' are being discussed as the geopolitical landscape continues to change. Annual extension of the directive may be considered, accompanied by a plan for a gradual withdrawal of protection.

We are already on thin ice with the latest extension, - said Martin Wagner, senior political advisor. - A simple interpretation of the directive would mean that it expired after three years.

Experts warn that it is crucial to have a clear exit strategy from the directive, as its drawbacks could lead to overwhelming national asylum systems. Various alternatives are being discussed, such as narrowing the scope of protection or creating a new legal instrument.

It is necessary to avoid ignoring the issue and develop an effective plan for the future after the temporary protection for Ukrainians ends.
