Four EU nations back Estonia's push to restrict visas for Russian citizens.
Estonia urges visa restrictions for Russians amid security concerns
According to Espreso.tv: Estonia has called for tighter limits on visa issuance to Russian nationals, citing security risks linked to the war in Ukraine—particularly for those involved in the conflict. The proposal, put forward by Estonia’s Interior Minister during an EU Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Dublin, has gained support from Latvia, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic. Several other EU member states have also reacted positively to the initiative.
According to Estonia’s Ministry of the Interior, the Baltic states and the Czech Republic have formally backed the plan. Meanwhile, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Germany have expressed favorable views on the proposal. Minister emphasized the urgency of the measures, stating:
“While ordinary Ukrainians are dying under rocket attacks, we cannot allow citizens of the aggressor state to vacation and shop in Europe as if nothing has happened.” - Estonia’s Interior Minister
Growing security concerns over Russian travel to Europe
Data shows that nearly half a million Russian tourists entered Europe in 2025, fueling unease among countries supporting tighter visa controls. The European Commission has already banned the issuance of multiple-entry Schengen visas to Russian citizens, reflecting a broader trend of stricter entry policies. The Minister added:
“Optional measures lead to optional results.” - Estonia’s Interior Minister
Estonia’s push to restrict visas for Russians is gaining increasing traction within the European Union, highlighting rising security anxieties in the context of the war in Ukraine. Tighter controls on Russian entry could reshape travel patterns and strain EU-Russia relations, underscoring the bloc’s commitment to safeguarding its values and security. These steps may also signal that EU countries are prepared to adopt further measures to counter threats originating from Russia in the future.
